A new IWA Cluster has been formally approved to elevate and coordinate Nature-based Solutions (NbS) across the global water and sanitation sectors. The Nature-based Solutions for Climate-Resilient Water and Sanitation Management Cluster (IWA NbS Cluster) was officially endorsed by the IWA Headquarters in March 2025, highlighting the increasing global recognition of NbS as vital tools for sustainable water management.

The Cluster will be co-chaired by Sylvie Spraakman (IAHR/IWA Committee on Urban Drainage) and Günter Langergraber (IWA Specialist Group on Wetland Systems for Water Pollution Control). It will serve as a cross-cutting platform fostering collaboration among IWA Specialist Groups to advance the research, implementation, and standardisation of NbS—including treatment wetlands, sponge cities, living walls, regenerative agriculture, and beyond.

Mission and Vision

The IWA NbS Cluster aims to:

  • Promote robust, science-based NbS across the water cycle
  • Prevent misuse of NbS terminology and reduce greenwashing
  • Foster integrated approaches to knowledge exchange, innovation, and policy guidance

This Cluster emerges in response to the urgent need for unified action and discourse around NbS in the face of accelerating climate change and water challenges.

As with other IWA Clusters, the NbS Cluster builds on IWA’s strategic ambition to amplify collaboration across specialist groups and workstreams. Clusters are designed to bring together experts across disciplines to address complex global water challenges through thematic focus areas. The NbS Cluster aligns with this approach, aiming to connect diverse knowledge and stakeholders around nature-based, climate-resilient water solutions.

A core team of representatives from key IWA Specialist Groups is currently being established to coordinate the Cluster’s initial actions and strategic planning.

The details of the cluster is provided by By Katharine Cross¹, Anacleto Rizzo², and Günter Langergraber³

The International Water Association (IWA), in partnership with the Gates Foundation’s Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WSH) programme, invites innovators and technology developers to apply for the Next Generation Sanitation Systems (NGSS) Project. This global initiative aims to accelerate the development of affordable, robust, and scalable sanitation solutions to shape the future of sanitation worldwide.

We are looking for bold, innovative technology solutions—from integrated systems treating all household wastewater (including greywater and blackwater) to impactful subsystems—that can help meet international standards such as ISO 30500. Selected solutions will receive financial support (from a shared pool up to $3 million USD) and tailored technical guidance, with the opportunity to participate in a collaborative workshop to refine and optimise the technology for real-world application.

The NGSS Project focuses on non-biological household sanitation technologies that can effectively treat both blackwater and greywater. Whether you’re developing fully integrated systems or subsystems that contribute to integrated solutions, we want to hear from you. Your technology must be aligned with the principles of Global Access, ensuring affordability and adaptability for low- and middle-income countries.

This initiative tackles the critical limitations of traditional septic systems—such as performance gaps, environmental concerns, and missed opportunities for water reuse and resource recovery—by accelerating the development and deployment of modular or integrated sanitation systems.

This year’s World Water Day, 22 March 2025, highlights the theme ‘Glacier Preservation’ and the International Water Association (IWA) is pleased to add its voice of support, connecting its work bringing together water professionals around the world to advance water security.

“With World Water Day 2025 focusing on glacier preservation, we need to recognise the impact that climate change is having on glaciers in this warming world and on the communities that depend on these vital stores of water,” comments IWA CEO Kala Vairavamoorthy.

An estimated 1.9 billion people rely on glaciers for drinking water and irrigating their crops. According to the World Meteorological Organization, in 2023, glaciers lost more than 600 gigatons of water – the largest mass loss registered in 50 years.

“The implications of failing to protect glaciers are therefore huge, and any loss intensifies the need to improve water management downstream if security is to be achieved,” continues Vairavamoorthy.

Water security encompasses a broad spectrum of issues, from disasters and diseases to conflicts over shared resources and governance challenges. Despite global commitments, prospects include that, by 2030, the demand for freshwater is projected to outstrip supply by 40%, raising the question of how to meet the needs of an estimated 1.6 billion people.

Climate change will further exacerbate the challenges ahead and glacier loss threatens impacts such as a decline in vital summer meltwater flows and a greater risk of flooding, including from glacial lake outburst floods.

“Water is a cornerstone of security. Every drop of water saved, every community provided with access to clean water, and every ecosystem restored, contributes to our collective security and resilience,” adds Vairavamoorthy. “At IWA, we bring together world-class experts to address such challenges and work to facilitate the knowledge exchange needed to benefit people and the environment.”

“So, on this World Water Day, we should support actions to preserve glaciers and use this urgent need as a spur to advance wider progress towards a future where water security is a reality for all,” he concludes.

The International Water Association and Grundfos are proud to announce that 14 bright and promising international young water professionals (YWPs) have been selected to be part of the second cohort of the IWA-Grundfos Youth Action for SDG6 Fellowship.

The YWPs are the individuals who have been selected for the joint IWA-Grundfos Youth Action for SDG6 Fellowship. These YWPs, together with IWA and Grundfos, will play a key role advocating for a water-wise world and youth empowerment throughout the Fellowship. They will take part in a special programme of activities, a highlight of which is active participation at the conference.

The group has been identified following a rigorous selection process. The open call for applications for 14 Fellowship places in October received several hundred applications from around the world. Aligned with IWA’s vision to promote and create an inclusive and diverse water sector, the selection process ensured a balanced geographical representation and gender diversity. As part of Grundfos’s wider support for YWP action on the SDGs, the group also includes two specially-selected YWPs from the company.

More details on the activities of the Fellowship will be available soon.

The selected YWPs are:

Elia Simonet, France
Emmanuel Nketiah Ahenkorah, Ghana
Hadi Mokarizadeh, Iran
Irene Mas Martin, Spain
Kamran Azizli, Azerbaijan
Karl Zimmermann, Canada
Meg Cummins, Australia
Micheala Ka Yan Chan, United Kingdom
